Harmful use of alcohol is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and is associated with many physical and mental illnesses including cancer. Numerous studies have indicated that alcohol consumption is causally associated with the cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, oesophagus (SCC), colorectum, liver and female breast. Despite a clear association, the public awareness about the risk of cancer with alcohol consumption remains low. A meeting was conducted by ICMR-ICRC to deliberate on the issue of Alcohol and Cancer to gather evidence on the association of alcohol and cancer.
